Wild Heart, located just a short distance from Kuthumba on Forest Hall Road, is a Self-Directed Education (SDE) centre that accommodates children aged 4-13. Many of the children who live in Kuthumba attend the centre.
Wild Heart is rooted in the principles of SDE, which prioritise autonomy, curiosity, and responsibility, creating an environment where children take charge of their own education.
A Self-Directed Education (SDE) centre is a space where children follow their interests and intrinsic motivation, shaping their own learning paths. It values freedom, collaboration, and trust while fostering independence, critical thinking, and lifelong learning, free from traditional curricula and assessments.
Our Approach
At Wild Heart, we believe in the innate ability of children to direct their own learning. Our facilitators provide guidance and resources to support each child's unique journey.
Participation in Wild Heart’s community means embracing an environment where children lead their learning and families collaborate to nurture this philosophy.
Current Context
Wild Heart is home to approximately 18 children who attend either full-time or part-time. The centre operates from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday to Friday, in a nurturing and dynamic space designed for self-directed learning.
The centre was founded by parents in the Kuthumba community and is in the process of becoming a registered Non-Profit Organisation. Jess Jenkins, the Lead Facilitator and Executive Director, oversees daily operations, enrolments, and facilitation.
While parents remain actively involved in supporting the centre, Jess handles its day-to-day management. Children from within Kuthumba and outside Kuthumba attend the centre.
